Quick Review: SpecialTea Company Assam Reserve

The SpecialTea Company are a US based international supplier of teas to tea outlets/resellers and offer an interesting array of teas, many of which can be bought from amazon.co.uk

As a top-up to one of amazon's add-on purchases I bought an 85g bag of Assam Reserve loose leaf for my work set-up and here's the resulting info:

This is pure Assam and as such falls under the single leaf category but, as the packaging points out, Assam is the base of any good breakfast tea and is often classified as such.

The leaves are on the large side but there is no indication of their grading - I would assume Broken Orange Pekoe - and there is a good scattering of golden flower tips in among the leaves. There is a strong hit of malt on the nose coupled with an almost tobacco richness which compliment each other brilliantly.

On first brew the liquor is a beautiful golden orange. The aroma completely changes and the maltiness is further accentuated by an array of spices but this tea is very much about the malt as is born-out in the flavour. For me there is a strength in Assam which prevents me from drinking it without milk and, in this case, the maltiness is further enhanced when drunk white. As the tea cools the spice becomes more noticeable as does the underlying sweetness producing an easily drinkable tea that makes me think that it would be happily accompanied by a malted milk biscuit.

The Specifics:
Location: Work
Method: Filter Pot
Brewed for: 4 minutes (a healthy compromise on the 3-6 minutes suggested)

The Score:
An amazingly rich and malty brew that could be enjoyed as much on a break from work as it could at breakfast. I look forward to trying other teas by this company especially their breakfast blend as this could only add further depth to the Assam. I'm happy to give this tea a score of 1:ii and I can see quite a few more bags being order in the future.
